L01 Games Analysis | Last Of Us

In this analysis of the game 'Last of us' and i will be commenting on different aspects of the game as well as make comments on the overall game experience.

The game last of us is of the horror genre, similar to other titles like the walking dead and slender. The game uses blood and gore along with sharp gameplay features to show the stylistic conventions of the genre leaving the audience on edge. The game is also very similar to other titles of the genre such as Telltale's Walking Dead game and games like resident evil.

An apocalyptic setting moving into post-apocalyptic. A father loses his child after being shot by a rogue soldier which leads to him working to avenge his sister.
The story relates around his lost child, which impacts the gameplay with cut scenes and roles towards his child.
The story affects the users (my) approach to the characters by feeling sorrow and emotion towards the main character. This makes me like the character more and also hate the people he’s fighting even worse.
The story connects with the target audience as the dieresis takes place in a post-apocalyptic scenario which is what fans of the horror genre will enjoy

The game was produced by Naughty Dog and published by Sony entertainment on August 1st 2014. Emotion was added into the game to enhance the gameplay, as well as realistic character animations and more. Elements such as in-game physics and mechanics are managed as would be expected throughout the game. With the majority of the physics engine running correctly. At some places the physics engine wouldn’t work as expected (E.G Invisible Borders around plants).

Characters are relevant to the target audience by providing a tough male main character with a younger character having to be protected. Like most horror games this combination provides the ability for emotional twists in the game which can run along-side the horror main genre. As similarly stated before the appeal for the target audience could be the emotional aspect of the game, protecting a young girl from the apocalypse. The male character feels strong in game having to deal with the majority of zombified corpses whilst protecting his younger friend (ellie) who plays an important role of being the means to stop the apocalypse

In the last of us, the challenge of the overall game objective (curing the virus) is present in the game. The level type is quite compact and closed which makes engaging, challenging conflicts for the player, hence engaging them to keep playing the game. Elements of gameplay key to the games success is the deep storyline and challenging gameplay aspect. The gameplay engages with the narrative as the main character is constantly protecting the other characters which uses the narrative to makes how challenging it is.

The target audience for the game Last of us is for males aged 18 or over, due to the violence and emotional story line that younger people might not understand correctly. The game appeals directly to the target audience by being post-apocalyptic which in itself appeals to player aged 18 or over.
The game compares to others with the same audience as similar to games like Dead island, although not as open world meaning more poor gameplay for the audience.

The platform for last of us is a playstation exclusive, meaning it is suited towards this platform. The game is suited towards this platform by needing a controller for the triggers of the gun and easy movement with analogue sticks.
